                                                                FUNGAL NAIL DISORDER

The current options for fungal nail treatment are to use oral medications, topical medication, laser therapy and temporary removal of the nail and for a new nail to grow back.  All these treatments have positive and negative results and side effects. Dr. Cheung will examine your nails and will discuss with you the best treatment option for you.

Symptoms of a nail with fungal infection include discolouration and thickening of the nail, and the separation of the nail from the nail bed. There may be a white, cheesy discharge. Without treatment, the nail bed itself can become infected. Treatment options include anti-fungal preparations and professional trimming, shaping and care of the nail by your podiatrist.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), stated the the toenails are have higher infection rates than the fingernails because your toes are usually confined to your shoes, where they’re in a warm, moist environment. Fungas thrive in this type of environment.

Any questions can be answered by contacting the office and speaking to Deborah or the Doctor.
